In 1961 The Anaheim Angels were an expansion team, played in their first Major League game, and were called the Califofnia Angels. The team was originally started by an old time country singer, Gene Autry. Today they are called the Anaheim Angels of Anaheim. The Angels have retired six numbers from the best people and players of their history. They are: Gene Autry (Team Founder), Jim Fregosi, Rod Carew, Nolan Ryan, Jackie Robinson and Jimmie Reese.

The Anaheim Angels are literally and figuratively in the heat of the American League West division championship race. If the Angels win the division championship, there should be a great deal of credit given to the rookies on the team. Mark Trumbo, Mike Trout, Jordan Walden, Hank Conger and Peter Bourjos are just a handful of rookies that are contributing mightily to the Anaheim Angels cause.

The Anaheim Angels have a very interesting history. In fact, their name stems from the original Los Angeles Angels team that literally came from the “City of Angels” meaning behind the city of Los Angeles back in 1892. They were first part of the major league (now minor) of the West Coast called the Pacific Coast League (PCL) back in 1903. It was rather interesting because the PCL actually paid more than the MLB. The team now known as the Anaheim Angels started play in Major League Baseball in 1961, although the “Angels” name dates back much further. The original Angels franchise started play in 1892 in what is now known as the Pacific Coast League.
