The team now known as the Anaheim Angels started play in Major League Baseball in 1961, although the “Angels” name dates back much further. The original Angels franchise started play in 1892 in what is now known as the Pacific Coast League.
Country singer Gene Autry was the team’s original and longtime owner before he sold the team to the Walt Disney Company in 1997. Disney then sold the team to current owner Arte Moreno in 2003. Moreno became the first Hispanic owner of a major American sports franchise.Didn’t catch that? This explains it.
The Angels have qualified for the post-season nine times in their history, including six times from 2002-2009. The team won their first and only World Series championship in 2002, defeating the San Fransisco Giants in seven games.
The Angels have gone through several name changes since debuting in the league. From 1961-1966 they were known as the Los Angeles Angels. From 1967-96 they were known as the California Angels. In 1997 they changed to the Anaheim Angels, and in 2005 adopted their current name, The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
In their history, the Angels have retired the numbers of Jim Fregosi (11), Gene Autry (26), Rod Carew (29), Nolan Ryan (30), Jackie Robinson (42, retired leaguewide in 1997) and Jimmy Reese (50).
