In 1961 The Anaheim Angels were an expansion team, played in their first Major League game, and were called the Califofnia Angels. The team was originally started by an old time country singer, Gene Autry. Today they are called the Anaheim Angels of Anaheim. The Angels have retired six numbers from the best people and players of their history. They are: Gene Autry (Team Founder), Jim Fregosi, Rod Carew, Nolan Ryan, Jackie Robinson and Jimmie Reese.
Currently the Anaheim Angels have minor league affiliates in A,AA, and AAA. The AAA team is called the Salt Lake Bees and play in the Pacific Coast League. The current Anaheim Angel is located in Anaheim, California and is named Angel Stadium of Anaheim. The 2010 Major League All Star game was held at Angel Stadium.
Since becoming the Anaheim Angels the team has won American League Championships in 1979,82,86,2002,05,and 09. They won the World Series in 2002 over the San Francisco Giants.
In the Anaheim Angels history they have had two players that were Most Valuable Player Award winners, Don Baylor (1979), and Vladimir Guerrero (2004). They have had two Cy Young Award winners, Dean Chance (1964) and Bartolo Colon (2004). The Angels have had one Rookie of the Year Award winner, Tim Salmon (1993).
Angels history has seen some very good pitching accomplishments. They have had one perfect game and eight no hitters. The perfect game was thrown by Mike Witt on April 11,1990. There were five different pithcers that had no hitters; Bo Belinsky, Clyde Wright, Mark Langston, Ervin Santana and Nolan Ryan, who hurled four of them.
