As of September 1st, the Anaheim Angels have a record of 73-63. They currently have a firm grasp on second place in the American League West. To some second place is an accomplishment, but not for the Angels. There is one month left before the season ends and right now the Angels would not be in the playoffs. However, they still have time to make a run, there are many players who are having good to above average years. Some players are even having career years. Here is a quick rundown of how the Angels are shaping up statistically this year.
Offensively, the Angels have been pretty solid. Mark Trumbo is experiencing a great rookie year and has already hit 24 homeruns. He leads the team with 73 RBIs and is batting .258 for the season. Other players that have shown a little power this year include Torii Hunter and Vernon Wells (both with 18 HRs) and Howie Kendrick (14 HRs). Kendrick leads the team with a .297 batting average and has 131 hits for the season. Erik Aybar is another player who is having a fine year. Aybar has 26 stolen bases so far this season and is third on the team with 123 hits. A player that is coming on nicely at the end of the year is rookie outfielder Mike Trout. After being called back to majors over a week ago, he has 3 HRs, 6 RBIs and a .462 average. Not bad for someone who turned 20 August 7th.
Pitching for the Angels this year has been centered on Jered Weaver. Weaver has been one of the front runners for the Cy Young Award this season. He has 15 wins and 7 losses this year, with a 2.28 ERA and 168 strikeouts. Weaver has proven that he is one of the top pitchers in Major League Baseball. Not far behind Weaver is Dan Haren. Haren is having another good year, giving the Angels two reliable starters at the front of their rotation.
